APW course system

The basic course of the Affolter model® is the core. It consists of three modules. Advanced courses build upon the theoretical and practical knowledge acquired in the modules. A seminar could be the first step to familiarize yourself with the model.
Here's how our course system works

That's important to us

Professionals are increasingly discovering the value of the Affolter Model of Development and the derived method of «Facilitation» according to Affolter. Many Specialists and also Relatives have already acquired the necessary tools for implementation in their daily lives. We present a varied and practice-oriented program here, in which you will also find something interesting. Working groups within the APW develop the course content in the Affolter Model® and their implementation. The APW provides the Faculty provides the necessary teaching materials and ensures the quality of teaching through appropriate regulations and guidelines. The APW Certifies the courses in the Affolter Model®. Courses are offered in various locations (hospitals, schools) in German, French, and English.

Practice-oriented learning

The theoretical content is always developed using concrete questions and case studies (video and live) and is implemented and reviewed in practice.

Authentic form

The APW-recognized instructors impart their knowledge, which is based on many years of experience and has been proven in practice. All instructors have the necessary recognition in the Affolter Model® according to our quality guidelines.

The different modules

Basic Course Affolter Model®

The six-week basic course in the Affolter Model® is offered in three modules: These modules build on each other and can be taken with different course providers depending on availability. All modules of the basic course are conducted by APW-recognized instructors taught. Practical application is important. You will be competently supported by experienced course assistants. Select your course type to learn more.

Introductory Module

  • Would you like to learn more about the Affolter Model®?
  • Do you want to better understand the behavior of those affected?
  • Would you like to experience what it's like to work with clients using the Affolter Model®?
  • Do you work in a therapeutic, nursing, or (social) educational profession?
  • Do you work primarily with one affected person within the family? Are you a family member or caregiver?

Then the introductory module is for you. In the five-day introductory module, you will learn the basics of the Affolter Model®. Through self-experience and seminars, you will explore the search for information and gain initial experience with intervention (guiding) in small groups. You will be supported by APW-certified instructors and their assistants.

Basic Module

  • Do you work in the special education, pedagogical, psychological, medical, or social field and want to competently apply the Affolter Model® in your daily practice?
  • Are you a relative or caregiver of individuals with perceptual impairments?
  • Do you want to acquire the offered knowledge and implement it in your daily practical life?
  • Would you like to better assess the developmental status of the affected individuals and draw appropriate conclusions for intervention?
  • Would you like to acquire the prerequisite qualifications to become a therapist in the Affolter Model®?
Then you'll need to bring some time. Over three course weeks of the basic module, you will engage intensively with the theoretical and practical aspects of the model. During this time, you should regularly practice with people with perceptual disorders and be able to document this with video recordings. Attendance at an APW-recognized introductory module is a prerequisite for course registration.

Certification module

You've almost made it. After successfully completing the basic module, you can conclude the fundamental course with the two-week certification module. You will deepen your knowledge and skills and connect them with further theoretical and practical aspects. In the final week of the course, you can complete a teaching-learning objective assessment and thus meet the requirements for the additional qualification as an APW-recognized therapist in the Affolter Model®.
