«Not »Tschakka," but "Tschakkali"
Ulli Süss, a young man with an acquired brain injury, and moderator Ladina Spiess describe his continuous progress within the framework of Affolter therapy. Gerda Sitar, mother of a 41-year-old daughter with ASD, smiles broadly and nods in agreement to the applause of those present.
The attendees include Government Councillor Bruno Damann, Irene Bernhardsgrütter, Head of the Special Education Department at the St. Gallen Office of Primary Schools, and about 150 guests from education, therapy, medicine, and last but not least, affected families.
Everyone has become familiar with the Affolter model over the past 50 years.® made that the APW, as a European umbrella organization, protects and promotes together with the most diverse professional groups.
Prof. Ursula Costa from the FH Health in Innsbruck and Walter Ehwald, special education teacher and long-time companion of Dr. Félicie Affolter and Dr. Walter Bischofberger, describe from a professional perspective how important the work of Affolter was and is for those affected.
However, the statements by Ulli Süss, who describes how wonderful it was for him when he first became aware of his body again as part of the therapy, or, to put it in Gerda Sitar's words about the effect of the therapy: „I can only say, life has begun – an interactive life.“ are particularly impressive.“
Towards the end of the event, Prof. Dr. Jürg Kesselring, former head of the Valens Rehabilitation Clinic, will join via Zoom and provide a brief insight into the early days of working with Dr. F. Affolter and Dr. W. Bischofberger in the rehabilitation of patients with brain injuries in Valens.
Luzia Fischer from the Burgau Therapy Center concludes with a heartfelt tribute to Dr. Walter Bischofberger and Dr. Félicie Affolter, leaving many of those present reaching for a handkerchief.
The handkerchiefs are then quickly put away again during the subsequent aperitif, and with much laughter and great joy of reunion, memories are exchanged.
The photos were taken by Walter Hofmann, Lara Carlot, and Tina Roelandt. We sincerely thank them!

F. Affolter had originally requested Luzia Fischer, Walter Bischofberger, and Adrian Hofer to review and organize the estate. Since Walter Bischofberger passed away before F. Affolter, Walter Ehwald and Matthias Neuweiler were brought in. The group visited Disentis several times and reviewed the estate. With the consent of the heirs, the estate will be handed over to the St. Gallen Cantonal Archives at the beginning of 2026.
